Binghamton Whalers
(1980-1990)

The team struggled for acceptance in Binghamton after the Hartford Whalers bought the franchise and made it their top developmental team. The team name became the Whalers in 1980-81 and many of the fan favorites were now gone, and attendance slid without them.

A few players like Randy MacGregor, Paul Crowley and Ken Holland made a successful transition from Dusters to Whalers. Throughout the decade, new players began to capture the imagination of fans. Players like Bob Sullivan, Ross Yates, Paul Gardner, Paul Fenton, Mike Richard, Terry Yake and Peter Sidorkiewicz among many more.

The Hartford Whalers began sharing Binghamton with the Washington Capitals begining with the 1984-85 season. In 1985-86 local ownership took over, as Broome Hockey Associates (Tom Mitchell, Bob Carr & Jim McCoy) purchased the franchise.

The relationship between Hartford and local owners however soured after the Washington dual-affiliation ended after the 1987-88 season. By the final season, with a losing product on the ice, local ownership was in talks with the New York Rangers to move their affiliation and future prospects to Binghamton.
